Intergenerational Art & Scripture-by-Heart

This creative session is designed to get your creativity flowing and connecting with the scripture in fresh ways. Julie Drew invites you to join her in exploring how God is moving in you as you learn scripture by heart.

Julie will introduce the process, and share some of her own art work and scripture.

The rest of the session,  we will listen to some scripture and respond with painting. We will see where the  process takes us. This isn’t about great works of art – but the creative process of letting out what is inside of us, in order to be seen. It is another way of listening and responding to scripture.

We do not always see our own hearts, emotions and life clearly. Art has a way of bringing to light that which we can not clearly see, if we are open to the process. The Holy Spirit is ready to connect with us and intercede for us with “sighs too deep for words.” (Rom. 8).  This painting process is a connection to that inner part of us and the Holy Spirit, through painting.

Julie requests that you come to the session with the art medium of your choice. (paper and pencil, ink, color pencils or paint (i.e. watercolor, tempera)

Leadership: Julie Drew

Julie Drew returns to us from Edmonton AB. A professional artist, she earned a Bachelor degree in Fine Arts from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma WA in 1987, and she has been painting and teaching Art for over 30 years. Julie’s primary media are watercolour, colour pencil, and ink, and several of her works are painted on her own handmade paper. Her art has been displayed in many galleries and organizations, and has been purchased for private collections in Canada, the United States, Australia, and France.

As an artist and retreat leader, Julie sees Art is an exploration into God’s creation and into God, who is revealed in creation, both in character and in mystery. Art is a language of the heart and soul, coming out of the feelings and emotions as well as the intellect. Her artistic process is contemplative, inspired by the Word of God and Nature. Participants say she teaches with a sensitivity that frees up new artists to take chances and discover new things.

She is married to Sam and has four children and a growing crowd of grandchchildren.
