WORKSHOP
Vocal Care
with Fabiana Katz
Saturday, Sept 27/25 - 9-10:30am (pacific)
A good storyteller is able to use variations in pitch, pace, volume, tone and pauses to add depth and emotion to the narrative.
Other elements of engaging and compelling storytelling include:
- knowing how to use/control emotional tone
- instinctive pausing
- appropriate use of accent and emphasis
- use of humour
- bringing characters to life through the voice
- being expressive and coherent

We are able to use these elements of vocal expression more fully, instinctively and organically when the physiological mechanisms and systems of the voice are working properly and coherently, and are able to sustain the voice so that it can function intuitively and freely.

This means that we need to develop our awareness of the proper and free function of the various systems of the vocal mechanism:
- Posture / Structure (relationship between muscles and skeletal structure
- Respiratory system
- Pressure system (related to breath and its relationship to the muscles)
.... all 3 help make up the SUPPORT system
- Vibratory system ( describes the physical inception of the sound larynx and vocal cords)
- Resonance (chest, pharynx, hard palate, teeth, cheeks, nasal and ocular sinuses, third eye, head)
- Articulatory system (teeth, tongue, lips, jaw)
My aim in this very short workshop is to introduce you, or at the very least remind you, of how these systems function together, and to give you some tools to ensure that they are aligned and working properly and freely, so that your voice can instinctively connect to your inspiration and your intention for expression.

Fabiana has been a performer, pedagogue and conductor based in Vancouver for the past 28 years.

Her knowledge of the singing mechanism and vocal technique is vast, and her intuitive and empathic nature is of great value when teaching. Her approach to vocal pedagogy is holistic and organic, based on the natural and proper structure of the singing apparatus and efficiency of the mechanism, and is tailored to the individual and their particular issues at the time. Her first priority is always to reveal and ease tension in the body, thereby releasing trapped sound energy and achieving a free, more resonant voice and greater physical relaxation.

She was a member of the Vancouver Chamber Choir for 30years and has appeared as a soloist with numerous orchestras around the country - the Regina Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Nova Scotia, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Orchestra, and the CBC Radio Orchestra, to name a few.
As a recitalist, Fabiana focuses on repertoire which highlights her varied cultural background: Argentinean Latin, and Jewish, both Yiddish and Sephardic. Her opera experience include the title role in Handel’s Amadigi di Gaula with Opera Appassionata, Cherubino in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, and Eugenia in the concert premiere of Vancouver composer Lloyd Burritt’s Miracle Flight 571.

Fabiana has directed choirs in Canada and the US, most recently championing the popular choral music of Latin America with the ensemble Fusion Latina and is currently music director of The Richmond Singers, a women's choir 55 voices strong, which has been sharing the love of music with the community for over 50 years.
Fabiana earned a Master of Music in choral conducting from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, OH. She is a sought-after clinician and has sat on adjudication panels throughout BC, Alberta and the Yukon.
